Renewing Our Love for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ Through Knowledge, Sunnah and Good Character

All praise is due to Allah, Lord of the Worlds. May His peace and blessings be upon our Master Muhammad ﷺ, his family, his companions, and all who follow his guidance until the Last Day.

With the arrival of the blessed month of Rabi ul Awwal, the hearts of believers naturally turn towards the greatest blessing bestowed upon humanity: the coming of our beloved Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

Rabi ul Awwal is a time to increase our gratitude to Allah, strengthen our love for His Messenger ﷺ, study his blessed life, revive his Sunnah, and reflect upon the immense mercy that Allah sent to the world through him.

This is not merely a historical remembrance. Rather, it is an opportunity to reconnect with the guidance that transformed humanity and continues to illuminate the lives of believers today.

The Greatest Blessing Granted to Creation

Allah سبحانه وتعالى sent the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ as a mercy to all worlds.

Through him, hearts were guided, communities were reformed, and countless people were brought from darkness into light. Every blessing we enjoy as Muslims today, our prayer, fasting, charity, remembrance of Allah, and understanding of faith, reached us through the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.

For this reason, the scholars of the Hanafi school have long encouraged Muslims to use Rabi ul Awwal as an opportunity to express gratitude to Allah for this immense favour.

True gratitude is demonstrated through worship, obedience, learning and following the example of the one whom Allah chose as His final Messenger.

Love of the Prophet ﷺ Is Part of Faith

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ taught that faith is not complete until he becomes more beloved to us than anything else in creation.

However, genuine love is not expressed merely through words or emotions. Real love is shown through:

• Following his Sunnah
• Learning his teachings
• Defending his honour
• Embodying his character
• Increasing salutations upon him
• Passing that love on to our children

The more we learn about the Prophet ﷺ, the more our love for him grows.

His compassion towards children, mercy towards enemies, generosity towards the poor, patience during hardships, and humility despite his immense status continue to inspire every generation.

Rabi ul Awwal and the Study of the Seerah

One of the greatest acts a Muslim can engage in during this blessed month is the study of the Seerah, the life of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.

The scholars of the Hanafi tradition have consistently emphasised the importance of learning about the Prophet ﷺ, not only to increase knowledge but to nurture love and attachment to him.

By studying his life, we learn:

• How to worship Allah correctly
• How to build strong families
• How to conduct ourselves in society
• How to remain patient during difficulties
• How to lead with wisdom and compassion

The Seerah is not simply history. It is a practical guide for living as Muslims in every age and place.

Understanding Mawlid in the Sunni Hanafi Tradition

Throughout the centuries, many scholars from the Hanafi school regarded gatherings of Mawlid as permissible and praiseworthy when conducted within the limits of the Shari'ah.

Such gatherings traditionally include:

• Recitation of the Qur'an
• Study of the Seerah
• Mentioning the virtues and character of the Prophet ﷺ
• Sending Salawat upon him
• Remembrance of Allah
• Charity and feeding others
• Encouraging obedience to Allah and His Messenger ﷺ

The purpose of these gatherings is not innovation in worship, but rather expressing gratitude to Allah, increasing love for His Messenger ﷺ, and educating the community about his life and teachings.

The scholars emphasised that the greatest Mawlid is not a gathering lasting a few hours, but a life lived in accordance with the Sunnah.

Reflecting on the Mercy of the Prophet ﷺ

Allah describes the Prophet ﷺ as:

"And We have not sent you except as a mercy to all the worlds."

His mercy was not limited to a particular people, race or nation. He cared for the weak, the vulnerable, the orphaned, the elderly and even animals.

He taught kindness, forgiveness and service.

In an age often marked by division, selfishness and conflict, Muslims need the character of the Prophet ﷺ more than ever.

Rabi ul Awwal is a reminder for us to ask:

• Are we merciful like the Prophet ﷺ?
• Are we honest like the Prophet ﷺ?
• Are we patient like the Prophet ﷺ?
• Are we bringing benefit to our families and communities?

The best way to honour the Messenger of Allah ﷺ is to reflect his character in our daily lives.

A Special Opportunity for Families

Parents should use this month to introduce children to the beauty of the Prophet ﷺ.

Tell them about:

• His kindness to young people
• His love for his family
• His patience during hardship
• His honesty and trustworthiness
• His devotion to Allah

Children who develop love for the Prophet ﷺ at an early age often carry that attachment throughout their lives.

A home in which the Prophet ﷺ is remembered is a home in which faith flourishes.

Making the Most of Rabi ul Awwal

This month, consider setting some simple goals:

✅ Read a Seerah book

✅ Increase daily Salawat upon the Prophet ﷺ

✅ Attend classes and reminders

✅ Teach your children about the Prophet ﷺ

✅ Revive a Sunnah each week

✅ Give charity in gratitude to Allah

✅ Improve your character and dealings with others

✅ Make sincere dua for steadfastness upon the Sunnah

Even small actions performed consistently can draw us closer to Allah and His beloved Messenger ﷺ.

The arrival of Rabi ul Awwal is not simply an occasion to remember the birth of the Prophet ﷺ. It is an opportunity to renew our commitment to the message he brought and the example he left behind.

Let us fill this month with gratitude, knowledge, remembrance, Salawat and sincere efforts to follow the Sunnah.

May Allah increase our love for His beloved Messenger ﷺ, make us among those who follow his guidance outwardly and inwardly, and gather us under his banner on the Day of Judgement.
