A growing legacy of faith, education & community

For over five decades, Balham Mosque & Tooting Islamic Centre has stood as a beacon for Muslim life in South West London—serving Balham, Tooting, South Clapham, and beyond. What began in 1969 as a small makeshift prayer room has flourished into a vibrant, multi‑site institution dedicated to worship, learning, and community support, for people of all faiths and none

A journey rooted in community

Our story is one of steady growth driven by faith, vision, and local support:

1969 – A humble prayer space opens in a Tooting home.

1973 – The first dedicated premises at 15 Laitwood Road welcome worshippers and students.

1983 – A major milestone: the purchase of 47–51 Balham High Road, transforming it into the main mosque with space for daily prayers, a madrasa for 250 children, and funeral services.

1993 – The Tooting Islamic Centre is established, offering capacity for 1,000 worshippers and relieving travel for local musallis.

1994 – Formation of the Al‑Risalah Education Trust, marking a new era of educational excellence.

2004 – Opening of a purpose‑built primary school for 420 students, supported by the Department for Education.

2005 onwards – Acquisition of 33 acres of sports fields and continued expansion to enhance worship and community facilities, including dedicated women’s spaces.

A place for everyone

Today, Balham Mosque & Tooting Islamic Centre offers:

  • Spacious prayer facilities across two sites
  • Dedicated women’s amenities
  • Funeral arrangements
  • Accessible, welcoming environments for all ages
  • A full range of Islamic, social, and educational services

What began as a simple gathering place has grown into a cornerstone of Muslim community life—a home for worship, personal development, and unity.

Education at the heart of our mission

Through the Al‑Risalah Education Trust, we proudly founded a network of faith‑based educational institutions:

  • Primary and secondary schools with strong Islamic ethos
  • A comprehensive madrasa program
  • Nurseries serving families across the community

These initiatives reflect a deep commitment to nurturing the next generation—spiritually, academically, and socially.

Looking ahead

Our journey is far from over. With Allah’s blessings and the continued support of our community, we remain committed to expanding our services, strengthening our educational offerings, and enriching the spiritual and social wellbeing of Muslims across the region.

Together, we look forward to shaping a bright and impactful future—Insha’Allah.
