Announcement: Hilal (Crescent Moon) Sighting for Ramadan

Today's Date: 17 February, corresponding to 28th Shaʿbān.

As 29th Shaʿbān falls tomorrow, Balham Masjid & Tooting Islamic Centre will be seeking positive or negative confirmation of the hilal (new crescent moon) tomorrow after Maghrib, to determine the start of Ramadan 1447 AH.

What This Means

  • The earliest possible start of Ramadan will be Thursday (subject to the confirmed moon sighting).
  • If the moon is sighted tomorrow evening, the first Taraweeh prayer will take place tomorrow night at Balham Masjid.
  • If not, Ramadan will commence on Friday, with the first Taraweeh on Thursday night.

How We Will Confirm

Balham Masjid will follow verified moon‑sighting reports and will update the community immediately once confirmation—positive or negative—is received.

Important

We kindly request that community members do not call the Masjid for updates.

All official announcements will be shared promptly through:

  • The masjid website
  • Our social media platforms

May Allah allow us to enter the blessed month of Ramadan with unity, tranquillity, and His infinite mercy.
